What is Paleo?

The Paleo diet is based on the diet of the original hunter-gatherers of the Palaeolithic period and is therefore also known as the Stone Age diet. Paleo comes from the English term "paleolithic diet" and translates as Paleo diet or Stone Age diet. This form of nutrition is based on the assumption that the metabolism of people today is the same as that of our ancestors from the Paleolithic Age. According to this view, modern eating habits are not good for the body and make us fat and ill, whereas the Stone Age diet can promote health and lead to weight loss. The Paleo diet therefore relies on all the foods that were available to our ancestors and are therefore optimally adapted to our metabolism and genetics.

What are the benefits of this form of nutrition?

As our ancestors in the Stone Age, for example, were not yet able to produce food from grain, the Paleo diet generally involves eating fewer carbohydrates than the average "normal" eater. This can, for example, change the intestinal flora and the diet can lead to a reduction in body weight. However, the focus of the Stone Age diet should not be on weight loss or dieting. Rather, it should be about consciously and intensively engaging with your own food and diet. As only foods from the Stone Age are allowed on this diet, you automatically avoid unhealthy foods and only eat natural foods. This promotes your health and body awareness, making you feel fitter and more comfortable. The diet is also used for autoimmune and metabolic diseases, for example, as it contains fewer pro-inflammatory substances. The natural foods in the Paleo diet also help to alleviate or even prevent cravings, as they keep you full for longer and keep your blood sugar levels at a constant level. Other effects often associated with Paleo include less digestive problems, a more stable immune system, better sleep, less inflammation and a better ability to concentrate.

Which foods are allowed?

If you opt for the Paleo diet, you will find lots of vegetables, animal protein, fruit and nuts on your plate - all foods that our Stone Age ancestors were able to gather or hunt. You should also pay attention to the quality of the food and ideally use regional and seasonal fruit and vegetables or organic eggs, fish and meat.

Basically, the foods allowed and not allowed in the Paleo diet are not difficult to understand, are they? Nevertheless, it should be mentioned that there is no single Stone Age diet. In any case, it can be said that our ancestors only ate natural and unprocessed foods. However, depending on the habitat and region, the diet and food differed. The inhabitants of colder regions were able to gather and hunt different foods than those in Africa. In other words, what nature had to offer was decisive in each case.

Who is this form of nutrition suitable for?

Our Stone Age ancestors moved around a lot as they were nomads and collected and hunted their daily food. This means that they were much more active than we are today. It is therefore advisable to apply Paleo not only to your diet, but also to your entire lifestyle. Also make sure that you spend a lot of time outdoors in the fresh air, exercising or playing sport.

The Stone Age diet is very suitable for people who like to eat fresh and natural foods and enjoy exercise. People in the Stone Age were mixed eaters, which means they ate everything, including meat and fish. Of course, the new interpretation of the Paleo diet can also be implemented as a vegetarian or vegan diet. However, you have to keep a very close eye on your protein requirements and cover them with nuts and seeds alone, which might not be so easy.

As with any other type of diet, you should also study it sufficiently and put together a variety of meals to provide your body with all the important nutrients it needs. Paleo nutrition can be super interesting and exciting, as on the one hand you are working with fresh, natural and high-quality foods and on the other hand you are traveling back in time to the past of mankind and looking at how life was back then. For this very reason, i.e. because Paleo incorporates our evolutionary origins, it is a sensible form of nutrition for many people to get and stay fit and healthy in the long term.
